Chapelle Notre-Dame des Pauvres

The chapel notre-dame des pauvres was founded in 1946 as a thank you after the second war for saving more suffering.

Stavelot suffered greatly from the Ardennes offensive. There were 161 civilian casualties, some of them from mass murders by the SS.

In the background is the 'pierre du diable'. The following legend about this:

Saint-Remacle built an abbey in the center of Stavelot. That was not to the liking of the devil, who wanted to destroy the building with a large stone.

However, an angel warned Saint-Remacle. He collected a bag of old shoes and soles. Saint-Remacle went to meet the devil on his way to Stavelot. When he saw him, the devil was on top of a hill. He carried a huge stone on his back. The devil blew and sweated. He looked like he was at the end of his powers. When he saw the man with the bag approaching him, he stopped to catch his breath and asked: "Comrade, is it still far from here to the monastery of Stavelot?"

Before answering, Remacle emptied his pocket at his feet.
"Look," he said, "I'm from there. I don't know exactly how far I've walked, but here's what's left of all the shoes I've worn since I left there."
At the sight of the incredible pile of worn-out shoes, the devil seemed to lose heart. "I'll never be there on time," he muttered. And he dropped the stone he was carrying. He turned and disappeared in a bit of smoke.
