This bust , designed by Joyane Vanhoutte, was unveiled on the Fishermen's Staircase at the east end of Fisherman's Wharf in 2005 in the presence of the singer . Represents singer Lucy Loes (born 1928) who died in 2010.
Lucy Loes, stage name of Lucienne Vanbesien, was an ordinary housewife until she was fifty. Then he opened a café - changed the name to 't Valentijntje in Staminee - and started singing in the room next to the café.
Ucy Loes became known for her fisherman's songs sung in the authentic Ostend dialect , such as "Min zeekapitein" and "Bie uus ant zeitje". The folk singer was called "the uncrowned queen of the fisherman's song" . Lucy Loes has often been asked to liven up local parties and create some atmosphere. He performed annually during the Paulusfeesten , where many thousands of people gather on the Sint-Petrus-en Paulusplein in Ostend. However, Lucy was not spared the suffering. She was the widow of Gustaaf Van Meerbeeck (1926–1996) and later lost her boyfriend Danny Pille (1958–2004). He dedicated the song Die visscher van mien to his brother, who died at sea at the age of 39.
