Joachim PATENIER (or Patinir) was a painter , born in Dinant in 1485 and died in Antwerp in 1524.
Patenier sparked a real revolution in the depiction of nature and, as Edouard Michel wrote, "making the landscape the subject of the painting itself and depicting the characters only as events".
"The Flight into Egypt" in the Antwerp Museum is a typical example of his working method. There are only five canvases with the artist's signature : "Opus Joachim D. Patinier". The D. = Dionantensis testifies to its origin from Dinant. The name was influenced by the Flemish pronunciation. In addition to the Antwerp painting, his signature also appears on the "Saint Jerome" in Karlsruhe, the "Baptism of Christ" in Vienna, and the " Temptation of Saint Anthony" in the Prado in Madrid.
The triptych in the Prince di Trabia Gallery in Palermo is the only triptych known to Patenier.
Patenier had the highest connections in the humanistic world. His influence on 16th-century painting is considerable.
