This chapel was built in 1885 and restored in the early 2000s.
Our Lady of Distress or Mary in Distress is a title of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The Need of God often refers to Mary's sorrow with the body of the dead Jesus on her lap. This image is then the Pieta.
Pieta (Italian: pietà, meaning "compassion" or "piety") is the art term for an image or representation of the dead Christ accompanied by Mary or angels. It can be a painting or a statue.
It is not the same as a Descent from the Cross or the Lamentation of Christ, but it is a more reflective subject. The most common form is that of the dead Christ on the lap of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
One of the essential elements of a pieta is that there are not too many figures around the dead Christ, this would quickly turn it into a lamentation of Christ and thus weaken the meditative character.
However, there is no such statue in this chapel.
