Description

Famous for its waters since the 16th century, the city of Spa attracts visitors from all over Europe.

The tradition of gambling is almost as old. However, it was in the 18th century that the craze was at its greatest: the number of "bobelins" increased significantly and the stakes got bigger and bigger. There was even a medical justification for these practices: drinking mineral water alone was not enough . To take full advantage of their beneficial effects, it is necessary to practice "voluntary movements" such as horseback riding, hunting, dancing and, of course , music, billiards, cards and company.

Many private individuals received gamblers clandestinely, but the lack of space soon made itself felt.

A playhouse, the Redoute, was built in 1763 in the town center and granted an exclusive license. The Waux-Hall, opened in 1770, thus openly infringed the privilege granted by the Prince-Bishop. After many ups and downs, the two competing establishments had to join forces in 1774. A third house , the Levoz salon, was built in 1785 near the Waux-Hall. It came into direct conflict with the first two and gave rise to the "Spa games affair" , which was one of the causes of the Liège Revolution of 1789. This conflict was not finally resolved until 1802 with the reunification of the three casinos .
