This is the Mnemonic Bridge and for once the name does not refer to an evil wizard or witch who turned Kempen residents into mules. No, this is where stubborn policymakers come into play. This bridge crosses the Zeeploop. This drainage canal forms the natural border between Meerhout and Geel and, a little further on, Mol. There was a fuss about this area for centuries. No one wanted to pay for the cost of disposing of other people's water. Building a connecting bridge was not discussed at all.
If you wanted to walk between Meerhout and Geel, you had to take a big jump over the Zeeploop. And that dared to end in wet pants.
The thaw came in the 1980s. The two communities found each other in the development of a cross-border walking network. A small concrete bridge sealed the peace. Geel paid for the bridge, Meerhout placed a bench.
The population proved that the bridge was more than a futility. During the inauguration in 1982, more than 700 walkers showed up.
