The Blankenberge water tower, popularly known as "chaterdo" or "water castle" , was completed in 1898.
In the 1860s, partly due to an expansion of the town with a quarter for the wealthiest bathers , Blankenberge began to see a need to push for the construction of a water distribution network. In 1884 the then municipal council approved the relevant plans.
However, the commissioning of these only began in 1893 with the construction of a sewage treatment plant, pumping stations and a water tower . The water was channeled through a canal and, after being cleaned through sand filters, pumped to the water tower basin.
The concrete installation tank has a capacity of 450 cubic meters. It has a brick case. There is a hollow concrete walkway under the cab.
The 28 meter high tower, built in Neo-Renaissance style , is decorated with ornamental brick and blue stone and has few rectangular wall openings.
There is a riveted iron spiral staircase along the inner wall of the fountain.
Since 2004 the complex has been a listed building
