Church Saint-Pierre Gros-Fays

Description

The parish church of Saint-Pierre is flanked by two lime trees and is surrounded by the walls of the cemetery. It is a plastered schist building, with a slender Gothic Revival tower on the west side (1892), a classical nave of four bays and a 16th-century Gothic three-sided chevet.

The church is very old. In the beginning it was certainly a fortified church (also called fortress church or castral church) - without nave nor bell tower - consisting of a single tower, like those of Graide and of Gedinne. She leaned away from Oizy in the Graide deanery. In 1586 Gros-Fays was granted parish status with sub-churches in Cornimont and Six-Planes. The church is dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In terms of architecture, the choir dates from the 16th century and the nave from the 18th century. The tower, which was in a sorry state, was rebuilt in 1892 according to the plans of the provincial architect. The rectory was also reconstructed in 1871.

A fire broke out in 1987 and only the tower and choir were rebuilt in 1991-1992.

Inside you can see the stone tombstone of Gerard de Lamock († 1778), a 19th century altar and an octagonal bluestone baptismal font (16th century?) with a copper lid (18th century). There is also a Stations of the Cross by the regional sculptress Laure Frankinet.
