This church, built in the second half of the twelfth century, was originally a Romanesque church, whose remarkable central tower in Tournai stone and remains of the transept have been preserved. The storey of the tower has three sections on the outside, each indicated by a water list.
Striking was the monumental pulpit from 1870, on which scenes from the life of St John the Baptist were depicted in beautiful carving. Unfortunately, on October 16, 2014, this church was completely destroyed by a blazing fire. Only the sacristy and the valuables in it were spared.
In consultation with the Immovable Heritage Service, it was decided to restore the oldest part of the church (= the choir, the sacristy and the tower) to its original state. The municipality, together with the church factory and Immovable Heritage, among others, is looking at the various options for the reconstruction of the ship. At the beginning of 2022, it would have been decided that an inner garden would be built here.
The tower was restored in 2020.
