This road chapel is located on the ommgegangstraat in Tiegem. She appears to have been completely renewed.
A road chapel is sometimes also called a field chapel. The difference is in fact that a field chapel occurs outside the built-up village center (ie between the fields).
The word chapel is derived from the Latin cappa = cloak, diminutive capella, and refers to the cloak of Saint Martin, Bishop of Tours (316-397). Sint Maarten gave away his half cloak to a poor man, the half cloak became a relic and the space in which the cloak was kept came to be called capella or chapel by metonymy. From the 7th century, chapel became a name for a (small) place of worship.
