Monument Ghent

During the corona pandemic, many people could only say goodbye to their loved ones to a limited extent. The Onument in the Vinderhoutse Bossen provides those survivors a place to reflect on their loss. It simultaneously commemorates the broader impact of the corona pandemic.
The Onument Gent is part of a series of Onuments in Belgium, designed by Bas Smets. The starting point of each Onument is a circle. Within the circle, there are multiple interruptions due to interaction with the surroundings. The remaining 13 elements outline a space as a place of remembrance. The number (13) refers to the first day of the lockdown in March 2020. Each element is made from concrete and can serve as a bench. Thus, the Onument offers survivors a place to remember and reflect, in the heart of nature.

Are you coming by car? It is best to park at the parish hall of Drongen-Luchteren, Gavergrachtstraat 103A, Drongen. From there, it is approximately 1.2 km on foot to the Onument.
