Durbuy is located in Belgian Luxembourg, in the heart of the Ardennes in Belgium on the Ourthe.
Its round shape reveals that the river once flowed completely around it under the old bridge, the place des foires and via the anticline to the current bed of the Ourthe. Durbuy was originally an island, well protected by the water, the castle and the city wall that was 550 meters long and more than 6 meters high. The construction of this wall was linked to the freedom charter of 1314 , signed by John the Blind, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia. This charter, which laid down the rights and obligations of the city of Durbuy, stated, among other things, that the citizens themselves had to guarantee the safety and justice of their city, which was then an important trading center.
