Halfway between Olsene and Zulte, the Germans had built an emergency bridge of rubber boats. In the
late afternoon of 24 May 1940, the German 348th Infantry Regiment succeeded in destroying the old
Leiebocht of the Neerhoek. The Germans were advancing in the direction of the new
Lys, but were heavily fired upon by the 19th Line Regiment which was deployed
stood behind the new Lys. The German troops did not succeed in crossing the new Lys.
