This work by the sculptor Jan Peirelinck and which of course depicts a beguine, was inaugurated in 1988, near the place where the old market hall had stood. The bronze statue was cast by the Eijsbouts Bell Foundry from Asten (the Netherlands).
Of course, this statue refers to the name Begijnendijk and the fact that it is first mentioned in the 16th century as a road between the various operations of the beguines. The first farm was the Begijnhoeve or the Pannehof. In the 17th century, the beguines built dams and dikes between the pools and fens. And that's where the name comes from. There were several dikes in the area, reinforced with trees in the shape of avenues. The most important part was formed by a framework between the old Begijnenhoeve, the new Begijnenhoeve and the Infirmerije.
