This artists' inn was the cradle of the 19th century painters' colony, which gathered here around the figure of A.J. Heymans, their great example. This is where the founders of Belgian Impressionism worked. Heymans and his friend I. Meyers brought the philosophy of the 'Barbizon School' working in the open air and full of nature with them. They had both been apprenticed there as young fellows. When finishing their work and when it rained, they used the studio of 'De Keizer'. In the side wall was a large window facing north.
