One of the painters who followed Heymans here was Henry van de Velde, who was a generation younger. He lived in 'The Emperor' from 1886 - 1890 and in 1889 made one of his most famous works 'Woman at the Window' in the labour-intensive stippling technique or pointillism. It is part of a series of eight canvases 'Faites du village', many in the pink, blue colour, which was very controversial at the time. Heymans was his friend, mentor and patron and bought the work. It is now an eye-catcher in the KMSKA. In 1893, van de Velde put down his brushes and moved on to another discipline, the applied arts, and later switched to architecture.
