Slipway, alongside the waterway, a beam floor brought above the bottom, often equipped with an adjacent berth where one can dry-dock the ship for maintenance.
A slipway has a nearly horizontal plane that is completely dry at low tide. It is equipped with a beam grid and fitted with structures for mooring. Some slipways have a slope next to the horizontal plane but are accessible from the road. The sloping surface is very useful for delivering materials and for bringing smaller vessels out of the water. The slipway with a slope and accessible from the road is called an "open slipway."
Slipways, the drying of a fishing or (inland) vessel in the designated areas. During high tide, the vessel is navigated to a slipway, or a slip made from pole jacks. This causes it to be dry during the low tide period. One can perform maintenance or repairs below the waterline.
Regional language from the Ostend dictionary:
- bankn: to bring a vessel onto the slipway to clean it
- banktie: tide when the ship can be cleaned on a slipway
This open slipway has been heavily used for a long time. The adjacent slope was easily accessible from the road until the year 1990 and was frequently used by sport fishermen, motorboats, and small sailboats to launch and retrieve them. Currently, this slope is still usable (?) but no longer accessible by car.
It was an attraction to observe the activity. At times it was very busy, and people were waiting in line to use the slope.
