The church replaced the Church of Sant Pere which was destroyed by fire on August 14, 1896 .
King Leopold II . had big plans for Ostend and would have liked to demolish this canal church . But he encountered resistance from the dean at the time. Loudspeakers from the Bruges bourgeoisie spread the rumor that the king knew more about the fire . The fact is that after months of investigation, the public prosecutor's office could not find a perpetrator.
The Sint-Petrus-en Sint-Pauluskerk is a neo-Gothic church (1905) with beautiful stained glass windows . The church also has two magnificent organs: in the rear part of the screen is the romantic disc organ, a masterpiece of 20th-century organ building . In front of it is the magnificent Silbermann-style transept organ built in 2004 by the Thomas de Francorchamps company.
In the chapel behind the high altar is the tomb of Queen Luisa Maria, the first Queen of Belgium who died in Ostend . Behind the Church of Sant Pere and Sant Pau is the Torre de Sant Pere , popularly known as "Peperbusse" . It is a remnant of the old church of Sant Pere which burned down in 1896.
