This is where the Castle of the Counts is located. The castle was built in the period 1662-1664 by order of Baron Jacob Ferdinand de la Pierre, lord of Fay, as an extension of the then "Hof Ten Damme". The Castle of the Counts owes its name to the noble family of the Counts of Salm, who lived in the castle for about 80 years during the 18th century. Over the years, the castle has changed hands several times. In the year 1895 the castle was sold to Mrs. Mathilde Maria Moretus De Bouchout - Geelhand. The latter had the castle completely renovated in 1902. In 1914, the castle, then partly renovated, was shelled from the fortress of Bornem. The castle was badly damaged and was rebuilt in 1916. On 5 October 1927, the Castle of the Counts was sold to the public limited company "l'Auxiliaire du Progrès", which set up a chicken farm with Avicola SA. Since 1963, the company has leased the castle to Willy De Maegd. During the first years, it provided shelter and care for 32 elderly people in the rooms of the castle. On 14 October 1965, the De Maegd family bought the Castle of the Counts and in 1968 had a nursing home built in the garden of the castle. The De Maegd family sold the home to the Soprim@ group, which was founded in 2004. In 2010, a thorough renovation of the residential care centre will begin. A new building is erected and all the old buildings are demolished. This renovation took place in phases, so that no residents had to move to other care centres. The completion of the buildings took place in 2012. The current Gravenkasteel residential and care centre has 200 rooms.
