Bron: Willem Vandenameele
In 1909 a statue of the humanist, Latinist and historian Justus Lipsius (Overijse 1547 - Leuven 1606), professor at the University of Leuven from 1592, was erected on this site to replace a cast-iron fountain that had been placed here since 1890. It consists of a high bluestone plinth in neoclassical style, signed "J. JOURDAIN - SCULPTEUR" and "H. VAES. V. CRETEN - ARCHITECTES" and bronze sculpture cast by Felix Van Aerschodt (see inscription). The monument was donated to the City by the Belgian State on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the re-establishment (1834-1909) of the Leuven Catholic University, see the inscription "JUSTO.LIPSIO/ IN.ALMA.UNIVERSITATE/ LOVANIENSI.PROFESSORI/ ADMCMIX .RESTITUAE/ UNIVERSITATIS.LXXV/ LEOPOLDO.II/ REGE. BELGARUM".
