This monument stands in front of the church in Hertsberge. It commemorates the victims of both world wars.
During the First World War there was a lot of German military activity in Oostkamp and Hertsberge. This has everything to do with the favorable location of the municipality. The Ghent-Bruges canal, the Brussels-Ostend railway and the Bruges-Kortrijk main road guarantee easy accessibility. The relatively small distance to the front is an additional asset. The numerous castles are a resting place for tens of thousands of German front soldiers.
Flemish workers and prisoners of war are deployed for the trade and transport of military material and ammunition. Oostkamp has no fewer than five German airports. Shortly after the liberation they are used by the Belgian air force and by our king.
