Actually, it is not a cross, but a stele. This stands next to the churches is of red sandstone, 3.60 m high. The relief shows the portrait of John the Baptist and the inscription "IOANNES SCHWERDZ AO 1693". On the weathered back was an image of the crucifixion. This cross was probably a 'plague cross', because Maldingen was often plagued by this deadly plague.
