On the left bank of the Yser, Kaaskerke territory, two hundred meters past the Hoge Brug, is the memorial known as the Calvary. It was erected in memory of the Allied soldiers who fought on the Yser Front during the 'Great War'.
Although primarily intended as a religious memorial, it also contained a response, a reaction to the Yser pilgrimages and the planning of the Yser Tower, a memorial to the Flemish fallen on the Yser. Mount Calvary became a lasting testimony to the ideological tensions that prevailed during the interwar period and the interference of the clergy in the building of war memorials after World War 1.
The monument was inaugurated in September 1928.
