Make no mistake, to be able to call a forest monumental, you also need dead wood. Here you can already see a meter-long copy. Both lying dead wood and standing dead wood are extremely important from an ecological point of view. They are the richly filled dining tables of the forest, and thus form the basis of the forest ecosystem. Fungi, invertebrates and other small grits feast on the dead wood, which are then themselves tasted by birds or small mammals. Digested wood residues reintroduce nutrients into the soil. And in addition, a fallen tree provides light on the forest floor, making it the ideal place for saplings.
