Winner Tree of the Year 2022
The tree is 25 meters tall, has a circumference of 555 cm, and is 292 years old.
Near the center of the village of Duisburg in Flemish Brabant lies a 2000-year-old crossroads where this beautiful lime tree stands next to an idyllic chapel. The crossroads serves as a junction of paved old roads where remnants from Roman times have withstood the test of time. The lime tree was planted in the first half of the 18th century and forms a beautiful picture with the rolling agricultural landscape of Duisburg. Besides its beautiful representative growth form, it is also the tallest, thickest, and oldest lime tree in the region.
The field chapel at the foot of this lime tree is dedicated to St. Barbara. The chapel was established in 1863 and almost a century later renovated by a certain Mr. Troberg, whose father did not fulfill his promise to build a chapel if his family survived World War II. Since 2010, both the field chapel and the lime tree have been protected as monuments, and recently both were also designated as architectural heritage.
