On the occasion of Bruges, European capital of culture, a replica of a medieval harbor crane from the thirteenth century was built in 2002 by the students of the timber department of the Vrij Technische Instituut Bruges. It is a scaled down model. The replica was placed on the Jan van Eyckplein , between the statue of van Eyck and the Spiegelrei.

After a restoration in 2009, the crane was given a new place on the Sasplein. In 2016 the crane was restored again, this time with durable materials.
