This is a monument in honor of Captain Resboux's secret army .
A cross decorated with a lion 's head, the symbol of the secret army, adorns the plaque of the monument.
The secret army consisted of 84 maquisards , of which 20 were killed (3 of this village) for the Fatherland in the glorious battle of Maibelle on June 25, 1944.
The battle of Maibelle mentioned on the memorial plaque is also known as the battle of "Sur les Sarts".
At the end of June 1944, about forty Maquis from Faulx-les-Tombes and Mozet went to Maibelle to the farm "Sur les Sarts" which belonged to the Michaux family. Because of their frequent comings and goings and their lack of discretion, they were reported to the Gestapo in Dinant. On June 25, 1944 , the Germans stormed the farm and the maquisards fought back. Three German attacks followed one after the other that day. The loss was great on the German side: 140 men were killed and 260 men were wounded.
Twenty maquisards also lost their lives in the battle. Some managed to escape and others were taken to Namur prison pending deportation to the Ravensbruck and Buchenwald concentration camps.
The Michaux family , then considered "terrorists" by the Germans, was forced to suffer the same fate as the maquisards. Fortunately, André Michaux, barely 13 months old, was spared and entrusted to a neighbor.
Sadly, his father Joseph died during the deportation. His mother Josephine and grandfather Armand returned weak and died a few years later.
Miraculously, the Germans did not retaliate against the civilians in the area!
