The three-nave Sint-Gertrudiskerk was built of brick in 1848. The octagonal tower from the earlier Late Romanesque church has been preserved. This tower dates back to the 12th century and would thus be the oldest building in Koekelare, and is also a protected monument. Characteristic are the round-arched windows with partial columns. The tower was originally a crossing tower, but the earlier transept has disappeared. During the First World War, the tower was used as a lookout tower, and the church served as a hospital. Inside the church, among other things, there is a pulpit from the mid-17th century, two confessionals from the 18th century, and various other antique pieces of furniture and artworks.
Surrounding the church is the Cemetery of Bovekerke. In this cemetery is the grave of an unknown British pilot who was killed during the First World War. However, in 2007, after thorough investigation, the identity of the victim was reportedly uncovered by members of the Archaeological Circle Spaenhiers VZW.[1][2] It is said to be Sergeant William Harold Roebuck. However, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has not yet reported this discovery on its website.[3]
