Neptune, popularly known as “Vadderik” (Vadsigaard), belongs to a monumental water pump from the 18th century. The name refers to the sloth , which would rather starve than bend down to eat the loaves of bread it is sitting on.
This Neptune statue was originally intended as an ornament on the water pump installed in 1718. The Mechelen sculptor Frans Langhmans made it on behalf of the city administration. On the sculpture is written: SPQM or Senatus Populusque Mechliensis, which means administration and population of Mechelen.
By the way, the trident came only in 2005, when the statue was moved for the fourth time ... In December 2012, the trident was stolen. It wasn't until two years later that the statue got its trident back.
