The Mechelen Archbishop's Palace is the residence of the Archbishops of Mechelen.
The building is a classic 18th-century palace commissioned by Cardinal Thomas Philippe d'Alsace. The building owes its Italian influences to an unknown Italian architect. Characteristics of classicism are the sober structure of the facade, a lot of horizontality and a U-shaped floor plan.
In 1789 the French occupiers sold the chateau as state property . The north wing and part of the east wing had to be demolished, and the rest was given a new function as a brewery . It regained its former role under the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Beginning in 2010, the building underwent a phased restoration that is expected to last until 2024 .
