This cavalry barracks is now the main remnant of an old military quarters.
It was built in 1690 by Vauban at the end of town. French, Dutch and later Belgian soldiers stayed there with their horses until the garrison was abolished in 1865. The stables had room for 160 horses . This very specific part of the city kept its military aspect thanks to the creation of two military schools that were located there until the First War.
Afterwards, dormitories without comfort were built in at the same time as the townhouse . In 1990 it was included in a reform plan. There are now ten social housing units in the Vauban barracks. The building has been a listed building since 1978.
