The walk starts at the station and takes you along the old railway bed to the Maiden Tower. Via the former Geuzenkerkhof, the market square, the St. Eustachian Church and the Elzenklooster you walk along the banks of the Demer to the water mill and back to the station. To make this loop of 3.3 km, a walking and cycling bridge over the Demer was installed behind room De Hemmekes.
De Witte accompanies you on your journey. In the free activity booklet you will discover various facts about Zichem and you can also read fun anecdotes from de Witte's book. You can pick it up at the station of Zichem.
Ernest Claes also walks with you. In several places you will find quotes from Ernest Claes. Facts about the history of Zichem and quotes from Ernest Claes alternate along the entire route. There are also fun games for the children. Play on the old railway bed of 't Trainke, the old steam train that took the pilgrims from Zichem station to Scherpenheuvel. Are you faster than 't Trainke? Go to the toll attendant to pay a toll for your ship sailing on the Demer. Or would you rather play a game of loemp shooting? Visit the music kiosk on the markplein and after some jumping listen to Zichem's most famous song 'De mennekens van plezier'. Visit Pastor Munte and confess all your little sins or relax in the dream chair with a view of the Demer.
Along the route of the walk there are nine Corten steel figures, each with their own story: the Witte van Zichem, Jan Van Lier (meier van Zichem), the toll guard, a cow, Pastoor Munte, Wannes Raps, the miller, the ship's tractor and the train conductor. At the end of the walk you can take a nice picture of yourself as the White, a farmer or Mother Cent.
Along the way you will come across a number of paintings by Tom, artist of 'Qwallity'. The paintwork on the old railway bridge over the Demer refers to 't Boemelke or 't Trainke. You can sit down on the train and look through the window as you zoom over the Demer. On the ceiling of the kiosk on the market square you can see a map of Zichem with a quote from Ernest Claes. Also at the station you will find a painting with a quote from Ernest Claes.
