There are a number of legends associated with the Wijnendale Forest. The best known is the legend of the eternal hunter:
A farmer had a son who refused to help bring in the crops despite the threat of a storm. He took his game bag, called his dogs and went hunting. The father was outraged and shouted: " Go hunt, always hunt and hunt from now on and forever". The son did not return because the curse condemned him to keep hunting. I would still hunt in the forest. At night he can sometimes be heard calling his dogs: "Tutier, come here, Tutauw, come quickly."
