St. Michael's Church is the parish church of the town of Avekapelle, located on the Kerkstraat, in the municipality of Veurne, West Flanders.Avekapelle became an independent parish in 1149, when it split off from the parish of Steenkerke. Before that, it depended on the Abbey of St. Bertin in Saint-Omer. The parish, which always belonged to the deanery of St. Nicholas of Veurne, was located until 1566 within the diocese of Terwaan. When new dioceses were established in the Netherlands in 1559, Avekapelle was incorporated into the diocese of Ypres. This would remain the case until the dissolution of the diocese.
