At the direction of Philippe V, divers from the Engineering Corps retrieved several bags from the water in Ronquières on November 6, 1986, near the turning basin of the Brussels-Charleroi Canal. It turned out to be one of the most significant discoveries in the Gang investigation. The bags contained a mini safe, which had come from the robbery at Delhaize in Aalst, a bulletproof vest stolen in Temse in 1983, and a bunch of weapons that were used in the robberies of 1982 and 1983. It was the ultimate evidence, it seemed, that there was indeed a link between the first series of robberies attributed to the Gang in 1982 and 1983, and the second series in 1985. In the second series, which ended in Aalst, there were many deaths.
