1.'t Vrijhof was commissioned by Pieter Roelandts, the bailiff of Aalter, to be built as workers' houses. A bailiff was an official who represented the monarch. In the 20th century, 't Vrijhof became a farm and a single-family home. Originally these were low-built farm workers' houses, with whitewashed façade on black plinth and green-white woodwork with 'dog blankets' (structures to support the roof overhang). The name 't Vrijhof probably comes from 'Friedhof' or 'Vredeshof', with the meaning cemetery. Maybe it was a cemetery at the time. It used to belong to the church.
