Surprisingly we see a strip of cobblestone road that almost dives into the pants. We wonder if these are the remnants of the first connection that was made here between Tremelo and Werchter, somewhere around 1870. Later, the road would be relocated on the route that we know as the Tremelobaan.
It wouldn't surprise us because a large part of the cobblestones consists of Tienen quartzite. You can recognize them by their brownish color. These stones have been quarried since the 18th century, but especially in the 19th century, to pave the roads. They were particularly hard and wore out the iron wheel fittings of the carts. There were quarries south of Tienen, including in Laar and Wommersom. The stone is also called 'Tiense vossekop'. The type of stone is a geological peculiarity because it is formed by the seepage and precipitation of siliceous water.
