From 1870 onwards, a military defence line was built between Fort Sint-Marie and Fort Zwijndrecht.
In the polders, this line of defence consisted of a dike, in the sandy region of a military road (Krijgsbaan). The excavation for the dike formed a long defensive ditch (the Lange Eind) with 2 defensive posts: the Halve Maan and the Put van Fien. The Put van Fien is a relic of the dike breach of 1953 that flooded large parts of Kallo and Melsele. Now the E34 cuts the line in two. The dike is freely accessible to walkers. You can also cycle on the southern part.
