The church of Lieler is a Catholic church that belongs to the parish of Clervaux Saint-Benoît, to the deanery of Nord, and to the municipality of Clervaux.
The church is dedicated to the Holy Cross. The feast is celebrated on September 14.
It is located on the main road, the CR338. The cemetery is situated around the church. Next to the church is the Monument aux Morts for the victims of World War II.
History
Lieler became an independent parish on September 30, 1807, by a decree of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. At that time, Lieler belonged to the Département des Forêts and was part of the diocese of Metz with neighboring parishes in the deanery of Clervaux.
After the Congress of Vienna, the "new" Grand Duchy was annexed to the diocese of Namur, to which Lieler also belonged.
Until May 7, 2017, it was the parish church of the parish of Léiler. It was the only church in this municipality.
The Building
Instead of a tower, the Lieler church has an elevated choir building with a steep gable roof where the bells hang. Due to its choir dating back to the 14th century, the church can be classified as a typical church with a choir tower for the Ardennes landscape. The current nave was remodeled between 1849 and 1850 after the old one, which had been expanded in 1770, had become too small and dilapidated after 80 years. The church owes its present appearance to a renovation after World War II in 1953/54. The main interest in this renovation was the medieval choir, where the frescoes were displayed and restored. A sacristy was added to the side of the choir.
On September 8, 1956, the church was consecrated to the Chapel of the Holy Cross, before being placed under the protection of the national monument on July 31, 1968. In the cemetery around the church, there are a number of old, slate-carved gravestones.
