This area is known as the Marginal Triangle of East Flanders. There is also one in Hageland.
If the origin of that name is the same as that of Hageland, then it has nothing to do with our current meaning of "marginality." The name may come from sick or wounded soldiers who during the time of Napoleon were called "marginals," and who came to this region to recuperate.
