The history of the church building dates back to the 12th century.
In 1868 the original church was described as a one-aisled cruciform church with an octagonal crossing tower, built in Tournai stone. A renovation took place in the 14th century, and in the 16th century the church was expanded with two aisles. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was a place of pilgrimage, as a relic of Saint John the Baptist was present.
However, the church became too small and it had also fallen into disrepair . In 1877 the old church was demolished. A new neo-Gothic church was built.
North of the choir is the Count's chapel.
