A laar is an open space in a forest. The name of this square refers to a distant past when the area north of the Turnhoutsebaan mainly consisted of forests. Moreover, the name Borgerhout likely has the same background. Many oaks grew here that were used in the Middle Ages for the construction of the 'borg', the fortress of Antwerp. Today it is a paved town square where a market is held on Friday mornings.
The square is dominated by the parish church of Our Lady of the Snow. The old neo-Gothic church was destroyed by a V-bomb in 1944 and replaced by a brick basilica (which only opens on Sunday mornings for mass).
