This museum is located in the former Mont-de-Piete , a monumental building from the Spanish Renaissance (1622).
The Archaeological Museum has exceptional collections from prehistory to the Middle Ages , including a 4th century sarcophagus.
From the Neanderthal in the plains of the Scheldt 70,000 years ago, to Paleolithic hunters and Neolithic farmers: the Tournai have provided traces of their habitat and their tools in numerous locations.
Prestigious pieces from recent excavations and classified as “Treasure of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation” are on display: a remarkably decorated lead sarcophagus from the 4th century (Gallo-Roman necropolis in Rue Perdue) and exceptional elements from the Saint-Brice district where, in 481 Childeric, Clovis's father, his horses and his entourage were buried.
