At the end of the 19th century, Verviers was rich and the city expanded into the open areas in the south. From the center, several cross streets departed straight to here. The Rue de la Concorde was built in 1901 to connect the center with the future Gare Centrale. The expropriations that preceded it led to controversies in the city council and fierce polemics in the press. There was also quite a bit of commotion around the architectural style that was allowed to be used. At the inauguration of this new thoroughfare, the city council eagerly accepted the suggestion of a comedian for the naming of the street: "let's call this street 'rue de la Concorde (street of unity)'."
