Saint Lambert's Church

Description

The three-aisled St. Lambert's Church, in part Gothic and partly classicist style, was given its final shape in various building campaigns. The entire church was built in white sandstone, typical of this region. The oldest parts are the choir and the original single-aisled nave, with Gothic core, and the square celebration tower in the transitional style of the 13th-14th centuries, flanked by Gothic side chapels from the 14th-16th centuries. The nave was later extended with a north aisle in 1615 and a southern one in 1766. The western façade, with a window and an entrance portal in 1615, was rebuilt in 1732 – 1733. The south sacristy, the deep choir with semicircular apse and the stair tower date from 1745. Inside the church, the clear nave is rhythmed by pointed arches on columns. Also striking is the wooden ceiling on nut and children's beams above the middle and side aisles. Facades and roofs were restored in 1904 – 1905 under the direction of architect A. Demey. The interior was also
Refreshed. Since 1942, the Sint-Lambertuskerk has been a protected building. In 1946 the church was protected as a landscape together with the walled old cemetery and the surrounding streets. The furniture includes a baroque main altar from 1709 – 1711, a service altar composed of panels of a communion bench from 1737, a bluestone baptismal font from ca. 1647. The organ (1797) comes from the church of Humelgem. One of the most valuable statues is a Saint Lambert from the 16th century. The collection of paintings includes works from the 17th-19th centuries, including "The Descent from the Cross" by Jan Van Hoecke from 1629 and restored in 1975. The stained glass windows from 1903 – 1904 are creations of H. Hochreiter and F. Geyer from Antwerp.
The bells belong to a large extent from the New Regime except for the clock of 1757 with the inscription: "Mines peter is Gilliam Van Bever and my godmother Maria Keyaerts - Steph. Roelens with syn two sonen cast me in the year 1757". In 1869 the St. Lambertus bell was added, cast by Severinus Van Aerschot. In 1949 the new St. Lambertus bell was inaugurated. The third or the Maria bell was consecrated in 1973 by Pastor E. Herroelen. This small clock is the work of bell founder Sergeys from Leuven.
