Description

The former monastery church of the Carmelites, now parish church of Saint-Joseph, since 1814.

Built in 1622, the church and buildings extended to the modern street that bears their name. Behind the church is the former Carmelite monastery , with its Carmelite garden (which has now disappeared).

The Carmelites are not forgotten: to the left and right of the entrance door are the statues of the two most important saints of the Carmelite Order , Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross.

Inside, the pilasters are somewhat Baroque . The stained glass windows and leadwork by Louis-Marie Londot were executed between 1955 and 1961.

Inventory: baroque main altar from the collegiate church of Sainte-Gertrude in Nivelles, 1961. Baroque side altars dated "Anno D(o)m(in)i 1693", with a Gothic oak Virgin Mary on the left and a baroque white marble Saint Joseph on the right (17th century ). Pulpit (18th century). Red on marble columns rescued from the former high altar (17th century). Paneling and confessionals (17th and 18th centuries). Large painted wooden Christ (17th century).

The church was closed in 2008 for safety reasons, but was deconsecrated and reopened after restoration in 2018 as a center of activities and cultural entertainment for the city of Namur. Since 2021, masses have been celebrated there for students by the Emmanuel community.
