The monument represents the geologist and paleontologist Jean-Baptiste d'Omalius d'Halloy. The statue was solemnly unveiled on August 21, 1881 .
The imposing bronze statue towers high above the surroundings on its stone base. D'Omalius looks down from that height with a slight smile, at the viewer, but probably also at the earth he has studied all his life . A boulder rises on Omalius' left foot. With his left hand he holds one of his own pieces of work , a card with the words ESSAI D'UNE CARTE GÉOLOGIQUE | DE LA FRANCE, DES PAYS-BAS ET DE | QUELQUES CONTRÉES VOISINES.
On the stone pedestal you can read the following inscription :
Jean-Baptiste-Julien d'Omalius d'Halloy

sénateur de l'arrondissement de Dinant 1848 – 1873
Omalius, born in Liège , had been governor of these Namurs and spent his entire life there.
