The railway was built on an old arm of the Sambre that used to surround the northern city wall.
The current station was built between 1861 and 1864 according to the plans of architect M. Lambeau. The neoclassical building in white stone opens towards the city through a central structure. It is symmetrical in composition and is flanked by a lower wing with arched windows. The elegant pediment has a rose window in which the clock is housed.
The facade is decorated with the coats of arms of various cities in Belgium, mainly cities with an important station or connected to that of Namur.
The two pavilions at the ends of the wings are additions from 1883.
