It has been one of the most emblematic monuments of the Walloon capital since 1958.
All the while, the Bayard horse launches its powerful silhouette towards the Meuse . Bordering the Pont des Ardennes, the work of Olivier Strebelle is part of the landscape. It is also one of the witnesses of the 1958 World's Fair . Then the 7-ton work was given a prominent place for the first time at Heysel, on the site of the World Exhibition.
The Bayard horse is cast in bronze and trimmed with ceramic tiles . If you look closer, you will see several numbered blank spots in the animal's fur. The day before the opening of Expo 58, Olivier Strebelle would lay ceramic tiles. He left. But when he returned, the tiles were gone. So he was never able to finish it.
According to legend , Bayard's horse was thrown into the Rhine or Meuse, but he managed to escape and according to legend he still roams the Ardennes forests , where the neighing can be heard every summer solstice .
