The monumental “Cockerel Fight in Flanders” was painted by Emile Claus in 1882, and that same year he made a high impression at the Salon of Paris. Claus mainly depicts popular figures (café owners, flea traders, a fowler, railway workers…) in it. An annex of the inn “De Groene Lanteern” on Stormestraat in Waregem was at that time the perfect place to attend the controversial cockfights.
